. was an organizer for ronald reagan. as senator, supported missile defense, defense increases, don't ask don't tell. i mean, right down the line very sort of doctrine supporter of defense. i was pretty shocked to see this huge outcry against him, and i think it goes back to things other than chuck hagel. >> yeah. just maybe. karen, lindsey graham saying this is an in your face nomination. he would be the most antagonistic secretary of defense. sharp words, which probably p r portends something more than just policy disagreements. >> true, although at this point lindsey graham has kind of lost all if not most of his credibility because he sort of has been balking at just about everything, and he has been pretty much following john mccain's lead on most things. >> it's worse that we don't know where john mccain is on this. >> he has been such a follower on so many issues so far that i -- him saying that, you know, this is a guy who is running the atlantic council and that's out of the mainstream. i think there's a little -- a credibility check. the challenge, i think, for the administration is going

doesn't shoot themselves in the foot in the next two months, which is a possibility, but if they don't, we think the economy is going to do well this year. we think stocks will go higher. inflation is relatively tame, pes relatively low. so even we're at a five-year high, higher and we went down. we think the market is poised to do better over the next year and actually over the next three to five years. >> michael, where are you putting money to work right here at a portfolio manager? >> well, we're putting it all over the place because we run a diversified funds so precious metals, shorter-term bonds because of the potential of higher rates and high grade corporates as well as equity markets, both u.s. and non-u.s. in the short term the stock market can outperform while the economy does not, but in the longer term those two things are going to come back to equilibri equilibrium, so, you know, the market is at a high here, corporate earnings in q3 were very weak. i think q4 earnings will tell a lot, and i think the political dynamic coming up in march is going to be interesting. i d

levels from top to bottom. when we talk about organizing a around a singular principal, i don't think the solution is necessarily to consolidate around existing labor movements. it is not necessarily to formulate a third party platform. the solution is to use these tools and use these bodies in order to consolidate power and to use that power to challenge the way in which decisions are made fundamentally. >> i would like to have time for questions from the audience. please go to one of the of mikes so it can be sure to hear you. i will alternate between mikes as long as we have people at them. >> do you think cooperation does not work in this country because people do not know what it means? non-cooperation, civil disobedience. >> and if not, why not? >> in this country. i believe it should work, that is the only way to help in this country, but it does not really work. >> it works, if you get the numbers. the important thing is about building numbers. and sustaining it. but it certainly works. worked in the labor movement. the problem is it destroyed all of the radical movements. i w

are supportive of israel. i don't know what his management experience is regarding the pentagon. little, if any. so i think it's an incredibly controversial choice and it looks like the second term of barack obama will be an in-your-face term. >> so what are some of the issues? start with israel. as you heard, a number of his opponents, especially on the republican or conservative side think chuck hagel is not a friend of israel and point to his position on iran sanctions. they say because of his position that iran sanctions essentially aren't effective, that that is another point against him. also, from the liberal side, comments about a dozen, maybe 14 years ago, that chuck hagel made about a candidate for an ambassadorial position, where he called him openly and aggressively gay. now, chuck hagel has since apologized for that, but that also raises some haggles among some people on the more liberal side. not going to be a friendly reception up in the senate, however, the white house obviously thinks they can pull it off. >> an interesting confirmation hearing, that's for sure. >> let's talk a

as well or will it just stay high now for the rest of the flu season? we don't know the answer to this. also this particular strain. it's h3n2 just appears to be a more severe strain. we've seen this before. it was severe then, it's severe now. more people having significant sickness as a result. >> every year around this time you hear two things. people saying every time i get a flu shot it makes me sick so i'm not going to get a flu shot. or they say i never get a flu shot and i'm healthy and so i'm not going to bother getting a flu shot. so as a doctor, what do you tell them? >> the flu shot is not perfect. it's about 60% effective. there's another flu virus going around not included in this shot so it's much better than nothing. it takes a couple of weeks for your immunity to build up after you get the flu shot so you're not protected right away. here's an important point and i think you and i have talked about this before. when you get a flu shot, what the body is doing is sort of ramping up the immune system. so it's recognizing that virus so that if it sees the virus again, it c

on a budget barack obama says give us a new credit card and by the way, harry reid you don't have to pass a budget in three years. this is crazy. >> would you support this year letting the debt ceiling deadline last? >> what i won't support is not dealing with the problem. americans sent us here to deal with the problem. the way this town works this fiscal cliff deal the only winners in the fiscal cliff deal were washington. they got more money. the folks i represent in the fourth district of ohio they lost revenue, small business owners had money taken from them. washington always wins and the politicians and consultants and folks here always win. 7 of the 10 wealthiest counties in the country are in the d.c. area. mr. van hollen represents one of those. this area regular americans lose and it is about time we said stop this madness and cut up the credit cards and we want a solution not another washington deal which helps d.c. >> a couple of joints, john. first of all, the sequester was not kicked down the road. it was replaced for two months -- >> replaced means postponed which is what

think as far as what we -- the contingent we have after 2014, i would wait and i don't know of any reason why we would make that decision today. it seems that we'd want to see what the state of afghanistan is. we'd want to see what's happening in the electoral process. all of those things are obviously big factors. my sense is there's no reason to decide whether 6,000, 9,000, 15,000 troops until we get to that point. >> but, senator reed, how about by the spring. to simply training and support by the spring? last month's pentagon report said 1 of 23 afghan battalions is capable of operating on its own. >> i was down in the patyka province, and essentially 87% of the operations in the eastern part are initiated and conducted by afghan forces, so we are already seeing a transition and by next spring the afghani forces will be in the lead. that's what our military has been doing and preparing for the last several months, so i think we're making great progress. there are issues ahead in terms of the election, but ultimately this has to be an afghan-led effort. president karzai recogniz

in washington, d.c.? >> well, i don't want to get into a debate with lindsey who i happen to be a huge fan of. i think he's one of the strongest members of the senate. but the president has chosen chuck hagel or is, i guess, going to choose chuck hagel. and chuck hagel isn't going to be working for himself. he's not going to be freelancing as a senator as he was when he made these misstatements which i suspect have upset senator graham and other members of the senate who might be concerned about some of the things he said in the past. he'll be working for the president. when working for the president you follow the president's policies. i don't see this prior statement as being -- first off, they may -- they may have been wrong. he may have made some statements which were inappropriate, as he did. but everybody does, i guess. and now he's going to be working for the president. and carrying the president's policies forward. i think he'll probably carry them forward rather effectively. the thing i like about chuck, and i've known him for a long time. we had our differences when we were in the sena

that is out there representing us on something called the intelligence committee? >> well, i just don't know how anybody could come to the conclusion that the country is a lot safer with michele bachmann having access to intel information. >> that's right. >> and will there be enough public support that could change her, that could remove her from the intel committee? >> probably not. i think boehner is so weakened, i don't think he would have the courage to do something like that, because i think we can't risk angering the far right wing. and there should be, ed. because as you point out, again, this is a woman who has already proven she can't be trusted with sensitive information, that she has no problem using it for her own political purposes, and she has no problem just talking off the cuff and saying all kinds of crazy things. >> karen finney, always a pleasure to have you "the ed show." that is "the ed show." i'm ed schultz. "the rachel maddow show" starts right now. good evening. >> good evening. thanks to you at home for staying with us this hour. in politics, the concept of low hang

, at least across the country. they tell us they don't have a count of how many adults may have died. but the cdc estimates flu kills an average of 24,000 people a year. health experts say it's too soon to predict whether this year will be above average, but it certainly started way early. jonathan serrie is live in atlanta, home to the cdc. any word on an end to this? it sounds like it's getting better down south. >> well, you know, that's the strange thing. although flu is widespread in most states, there are early reports suggesting that flu activity may actually be decreasing in some parts of the country. including parts of the south. that could simply be because of lower reporting. people usually put off doctor visits during the holidays except in extreme emergencies. cdc officials say they need a couple more weeks before they can say for sure whether flu activity is actually decreasing in these parts of the country. shep. >> shepard: vaccine supply plentiful, right? >> it is plentiful but so -- there is so much demand for the vaccine now that the cdc is receiving reports of spo

. >> hagel was a thorn when he turned against the iraq war. >> republicans don't consider him a republican. >> chuck hagel has left the republican party. >> he has long cut his ties with the republican party. >> when he endorsed president obama in 2008. >> democrats don't accept him as an alternative choice. >> hagel appears to be a man without a party. >> is chuck hagel the right choice for secretary of defense? it is certainly not the most easy one. >> the new conservative dominance of policy thinking ended when barack obama was elected president. but today was the day that the obama administration made the single biggest play to define what comes next. today, he nominated chuck hagel, in doing, he nominated the first vietnam veteran. >> he understands that sending young americans to fight and bleed in the dirt and mud, that is something we only do when it is absolutely necessary. my frame of reference, he has said, is geared to the guy at the bottom who is doing the fighting and the dying. with chuck, our troops will always know just like sergeant hagel was there for his own brother, se

at the time of his collection and they don't reflect our desire to celebrate the strength and diversity of our country at this inaugural. before we get to vice president biden's big meeting with the nra, talk about this pastor. he decided to step aside. he wasn't to our knowledge at least told to step down. what else do you know? >> reporter: well, right now, they're trying to figure out who should replace him. the white house hasn't officially commented on that, tamron. remember, this comes after the 2008 inauguration in which rick warren, pastor warren, who delivered the benediction there, got a lot of criticism for some comments that people deemed to be homophobic. so clearly this was a way of averting that type of criticism again. the decision to withdraw coming from the reverend himself. that's what we're being told at this point in time and we are waiting to see who will replace him. but those comments clearly would have drawn some unwanted criticism for this second inaugural which, by the way, is sort of a scaled down version of the first inauguration back in 2008. tamron? >> let's go t

, practically, whatsoever. >> i don't want to throw any water on that, but historically, budget estimates, aren't they sometimes looked at as just being kind of widely optimistic? >> well, they vary. some are more wildly optimistic than others. i think we'll know more about that. the legislative analyst's office is going to put out its overview of the governor's budget next week. i'll be delving into it more deeply in the weeks to come. what we don't have is a lot of the sort of smoke and mirrors tricks, accounting tricks that were used to balance budgets in past years. not so much under jerry brown, but in recent memory. i won't name me names. this seems to be a bona fide projection. now, there was some raising of the eyebrows yesterday because the lao, the legtiislative analyst's office projected we might have a $2 billion deficit that needed to be fixed. jerry brown's budget does not show that. mainly because he's repaying loans from other pots of state money that were used to balance the general fund more slowly than the analysts anticipated and he also anticipates collecting considerably m
